What to expect

  • The masseter is a large muscle, so slimming takes at least 4 weeks to see.
  • Both sides are usually treated with the same dose on a first visit, then reassessed.
  • If you need a touch-up, it is the same $6 a unit and the 20-unit minimum is waived. For large muscles that is within 2 months.

Possible side effects

  • Bruising, minor swelling or tenderness at the injection sites.
  • The muscle can look like it bulges when you chew in the first weeks. It is uncommon and settles.

“For the masseters, how long until it slims down or wears off?”
Xeomin starts working in 3 to 5 days. Slimming takes at least 4 weeks to see because the masseter is a large muscle. The effect typically lasts 3 to 4 months.
“Is the masseter treatment for jaw clenching, or more aesthetic?”
Both. Some clients come for a softer jawline, some for clenching and grinding. Tell your nurse your goal at the start. If clenching is not resolved by the masseter alone, your nurse may suggest adding the temporalis, the muscle at the temple.
“Do I need to clench my jaw?”
For a moment, yes. Your nurse asks you to clench so they can feel where the muscle is and how strong it is before choosing the injection points.
“Wait, so there's supposed to be a bulge?”
It is not the goal, but it can happen. In the first weeks the muscle can look like it bulges when you chew. It is uncommon and it settles.
“When you do masseter, how do you prevent jowls?”
Repeated high doses in the masseter can reduce support in the lower face over time. We start with a conservative dose, treat both sides equally on a first visit, and reassess before adding more. We do not judge the dose before 2 weeks.
“How many units is that versus if I did it purely for grinding?”
We do not dose differently for grinding and for slimming. Your nurse decides the dose from the size and strength of the muscle at your in-person assessment.
“How often do people get the masseter done?”
The effect typically lasts 3 to 4 months. Your nurse reassesses the muscle at each visit before deciding the dose.
